{"id":969,"date":"2014-04-28T18:55:17","date_gmt":"2014-04-28T18:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/?p=969"},"modified":"2019-01-12T16:02:21","modified_gmt":"2019-01-12T16:02:21","slug":"riveting-the-horizontal-stabilizer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/?p=969","title":{"rendered":"Riveting the horizontal stabilizer skeleton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Once primer work done, parts of the horizontal stabilizer are collected (even with the engraver, not so easy to see the letters !).<br \/>\nThe assembly is again clecoed then riveted using several tools according to accessibility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rear spar <\/strong><br \/>\nFirst piece riveted to the rivet gun (part of the rear spar)<br \/>\n<center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4547.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><br \/>\n<center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4550.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>After, it is easy<br \/>\n<center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4562.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><br \/>\n<center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4572.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4564.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lesson learned<\/strong><br \/>\nThe round-headed rivet may be put on the two sides of the workpiece .<br \/>\nI started to put those rivets heads toward the reinforcement bar and thus crush the rivet on the side of the thinnest part.<br \/>\nHaving asked Manu (Happy builder of a RV- 7) , he told me that the rivet heads always put the most fragile side for obvious reasons of strength.<br \/>\nSo I left the rivets in place on the first length ( the \u201cbad\u201d side) and put the rivets on the right side on the second length . No importance , but it is a question of aviation construction standards.<br \/>\nA principle to remember for the rest of the construction.<\/p>\n<p><center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4561.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><br \/>\n<center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4569.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Here is the result for the rear spare<br \/>\n<center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4633.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><strong>Front spare<\/strong><br \/>\nMost part of the front spar rivets are not rivetables with pliers or pneumatic tool.<br \/>\nThe proper tool is rivet gun, its different tips and bucking bars.<br \/>\nNot obvious, a little apprehension but in one evening, everything is all alone !<\/p>\n<p><center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4588.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><br \/>\n<center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4591.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Here is the result<br \/>\n<center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4647.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4646.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><br \/>\n<center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4641.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4640.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Well, some rivets had to be drilled out.<br \/>\n<center><img src=\"http:\/\/www.flying-rv7.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/IMG_4579.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lesson learned<\/strong><br \/>\nFor beginners like me : hold the pneumatic squeezer well perpendicular to the longeron, rivets will be even more rights.<br \/>\nThe principle is : having to remove the least amount of rivets !
